Panagia Platytera / Mother of God “More Spacious than the Heavens”

Panagia Platytera means “The All-Holy One, More Spacious than the Heavens.” This ancient title honors the profound mystery that the Virgin Mary bore within her womb the Incarnate Son of God, whom even the heavens cannot contain. Traditionally depicted with Christ enthroned upon her breast and her hands raised in prayer, the Platytera icon is a powerful witness to the Incarnation and is often found above the altar in Orthodox churches, reminding the faithful that through the Theotokos, God came to dwell among mankind.
